Single correct option

If the area of the triangle whose vertices are the complex numbers zz, iziz and z+izz+iz is 5050 square units, then ∣z∣|z| equals
  1. A. 525\sqrt2
  2. B. 1010
  3. C. 2525
  4. D. 5050
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1010

Take the sides from the vertex z+izz+iz: the vectors to the other vertices are (z+iz)−z=iz(z+iz)-z=iz and (z+iz)−iz=z(z+iz)-iz=z. Multiplication by ii rotates by 90∘90^\circ, so these two sides are perpendicular, and each has length ∣z∣|z|. The triangle is therefore right-angled and isosceles with legs ∣z∣|z|, and its area is 12∣z∣2\frac12|z|^2. Setting 12∣z∣2=50\frac12|z|^2=50 gives ∣z∣2=100|z|^2=100, so ∣z∣=10|z|=10. Taking the area as ∣z∣2|z|^2 would wrongly give 525\sqrt2.
