The least positive integer n for which ((√3+i)/(√3-i))^n=1 is

Single correct option

The least positive integer nn for which (3+i3−i)n=1\left(\dfrac{\sqrt3+i}{\sqrt3-i}\right)^{n}=1 is
  1. A. 33
  2. B. 1212
  3. C. 66
  4. D. 44
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 66

Write 3+i=2eiπ/6\sqrt3+i=2e^{i\pi/6} and 3−i=2e−iπ/6\sqrt3-i=2e^{-i\pi/6}. Their ratio is eiπ/3e^{i\pi/3}, a primitive sixth root of unity. Then einπ/3=1e^{in\pi/3}=1 requires nπ/3=2πkn\pi/3=2\pi k, i.e. nn a multiple of 66. The least positive value is n=6n=6. Using n=3n=3 gives −1-1, and n=12n=12 works but is not the least.
