Single correct option

If zz is a complex number with ∣z−2−3i∣=3|z-2-3i|=3, then the greatest possible value of ∣z+2∣|z+2| is
  1. A. 55
  2. B. 33
  3. C. 88
  4. D. 2132\sqrt{13}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 88

The condition says that zz lies on the circle with centre C(2,3)C(2,3) and radius 33. The quantity ∣z+2∣=∣z−(−2)∣|z+2|=|z-(-2)| is the distance of zz from the point Q(−2,0)Q(-2,0). The distance from QQ to the centre is ∣CQ∣=(2+2)2+(3−0)2=5|CQ|=\sqrt{(2+2)^2+(3-0)^2}=5. Since QQ lies outside the circle (5>35>3), the greatest distance from QQ to a point of the circle is attained on the line QCQC beyond the centre and equals ∣CQ∣+r=5+3=8|CQ|+r=5+3=8. The least value would be 5−3=25-3=2.
