Single correct option

For real constants λ,μ\lambda,\mu, the linear system x+y+z=6, x+2y+3z=10, x+2y+λz=μx+y+z=6,\ x+2y+3z=10,\ x+2y+\lambda z=\mu has infinitely many solutions. The value of λ+μ\lambda+\mu is
  1. A. 13
  2. B. 3
  3. C. 10
  4. D. 16
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 13

Subtracting the second equation from the third gives (λ−3)z=μ−10(\lambda-3)z=\mu-10. For infinitely many solutions this must hold for all zz on the solution line, so λ=3\lambda=3 and μ=10\mu=10. Hence λ+μ=13\lambda+\mu=13.
