For the system x+y+z=6, x+2y+3z=14, x+2y+λ z=μ to have infinitely many solutions, λ+μ must equal

Single correct option

For the system x+y+z=6, x+2y+3z=14, x+2y+λz=μx+y+z=6,\ x+2y+3z=14,\ x+2y+\lambda z=\mu to have infinitely many solutions, λ+μ\lambda+\mu must equal
  1. A. 1414
  2. B. 1717
  3. C. 33
  4. D. 2020
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1717

Subtracting the second equation from the third gives (λ−3)z=μ−14(\lambda-3)z=\mu-14. Infinitely many solutions need λ−3=0\lambda-3=0 and μ−14=0\mu-14=0, i.e. λ=3, μ=14\lambda=3,\ \mu=14. Hence λ+μ=17\lambda+\mu=17.
