The number of amphoteric oxides among Al2O3, ZnO, CO, N2O, SnO2, BeO, PbO and CaO is

Single correct option

The number of amphoteric oxides among Al2O3\mathrm{Al_2O_3}, ZnO\mathrm{ZnO}, CO\mathrm{CO}, N2O\mathrm{N_2O}, SnO2\mathrm{SnO_2}, BeO\mathrm{BeO}, PbO\mathrm{PbO} and CaO\mathrm{CaO} is
  1. A. 4
  2. B. 5
  3. C. 6
  4. D. 3
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 5

Amphoteric oxides react with both acids and bases: Al2O3\mathrm{Al_2O_3}, ZnO\mathrm{ZnO}, SnO2\mathrm{SnO_2}, BeO\mathrm{BeO} and PbO\mathrm{PbO}, five in all (metal oxides near the metal/non-metal border, plus the small Be2+\mathrm{Be^{2+}} ion). CO\mathrm{CO} and N2O\mathrm{N_2O} are neutral oxides, and CaO\mathrm{CaO} is clearly basic (it reacts with water to form Ca(OH)2\mathrm{Ca(OH)_2} and does not dissolve in alkali). The answer is therefore 55.
