The correct order of second ionisation enthalpy (IE2) of Be, B, C and N is

Single correct option

The correct order of second ionisation enthalpy (IE2\mathrm{IE_2}) of Be, B, C and N is
  1. A. Be<B<C<N\mathrm{Be<B<C<N}
  2. B. Be<C<N<B\mathrm{Be<C<N<B}
  3. C. Be<C<B<N\mathrm{Be<C<B<N}
  4. D. B<Be<C<N\mathrm{B<Be<C<N}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Be<C<B<N\mathrm{Be<C<B<N}

IE2\mathrm{IE_2} removes an electron from the monovalent cation. Be+\mathrm{Be^+} (2s12s^1) loses an easily removed outer ss electron: lowest. B+\mathrm{B^+} is 2s22s^2 (stable, filled subshell), so IE2\mathrm{IE_2} is high; C+\mathrm{C^+} is 2s22p12s^22p^1 and loses the 2p2p electron more easily than B+\mathrm{B^+} loses a 2s2s electron. N+\mathrm{N^+} is 2s22p22s^22p^2 with higher nuclear charge. Order (kJ/mol): Be 17571757 < C 23532353 < B 24272427 < N 28562856.
