Represents the correct order of first ionisation enthalpy?

Single correct option

Which of the following represents the correct order of first ionisation enthalpy?
  1. A. Li<Be<B<C<N<O\mathrm{Li}<\mathrm{Be}<\mathrm{B}<\mathrm{C}<\mathrm{N}<\mathrm{O}
  2. B. Li<B<Be<C<O<N\mathrm{Li}<\mathrm{B}<\mathrm{Be}<\mathrm{C}<\mathrm{O}<\mathrm{N}
  3. C. Li<B<Be<C<N<O\mathrm{Li}<\mathrm{B}<\mathrm{Be}<\mathrm{C}<\mathrm{N}<\mathrm{O}
  4. D. Li<Be<B<C<O<N\mathrm{Li}<\mathrm{Be}<\mathrm{B}<\mathrm{C}<\mathrm{O}<\mathrm{N}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Li<B<Be<C<O<N\mathrm{Li}<\mathrm{B}<\mathrm{Be}<\mathrm{C}<\mathrm{O}<\mathrm{N}

Along a period, ionisation enthalpy rises with nuclear charge, but two anomalies occur. Boron (2s22p12s^22p^1) is lower than beryllium (2s22s^2) because the 2p2p electron is removed more easily than a 2s2s electron of a full subshell. Oxygen (2p42p^4) is lower than nitrogen (2p32p^3) because pairing repulsion in oxygen makes removal easier than from the half-filled 2p32p^3 set. Values in kJ mol−1\mathrm{kJ\,mol^{-1}}: Li 520, B 801, Be 899, C 1086, O 1314, N 1402. Hence Li<B<Be<C<O<N\mathrm{Li}<\mathrm{B}<\mathrm{Be}<\mathrm{C}<\mathrm{O}<\mathrm{N}.
