The area of the region bounded by the curve y=x^3, the line y=8 and the y-axis is

Single correct option

The area of the region bounded by the curve y=x3y=x^3, the line y=8y=8 and the yy-axis is
  1. A. 1212 square units
  2. B. 1616 square units
  3. C. 44 square units
  4. D. 2424 square units
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1212 square units

Integrate with respect to yy: x=y1/3x=y^{1/3}, so the area is ∫08y1/3dy=34⋅84/3=34⋅16=12\int_0^8y^{1/3}dy=\frac34\cdot8^{4/3}=\frac34\cdot16=12. Equivalently, the rectangle 2×8=162\times8=16 minus ∫02x3dx=4\int_0^2x^3dx=4. The value 1616 is the rectangle and 44 is the area below the curve.
