Single correct option

The area, in square units, of the region lying in the first quadrant and enclosed between the curve y=x3y=x^3 and the straight line y=xy=x is
  1. A. 12\dfrac12
  2. B. 14\dfrac14
  3. C. 13\dfrac13
  4. D. 16\dfrac16
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 14\dfrac14

In the first quadrant the curves meet at x=0x=0 and x=1x=1, and the line lies above the cubic. Area =∫01(x−x3)dx=12−14=14=\int_0^1(x-x^3)dx=\dfrac12-\dfrac14=\dfrac14. The value 12\dfrac12 is only the area under the line.
