All the binomial coefficients in the expansion of (1+x)^8 are even. 2. The expansion of (a+b)^9 has a single middle term.

Single correct option

Consider the following statements:
1. All the binomial coefficients in the expansion of (1+x)8(1+x)^8 are even.
2. The expansion of (a+b)9(a+b)^9 has a single middle term.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) Neither 1 nor 2

In (1+x)8(1+x)^8 the first coefficient (80)=1\binom80=1 is odd, so statement 1 is false. The expansion of (a+b)9(a+b)^9 has 1010 terms, an even number, so there are two middle terms, the 55th and the 66th; statement 2 is false. Middle terms are single only when the exponent is even. Hence neither statement is correct.
