Single correct option

If the coefficients of the 55th, 66th and 77th terms in the expansion of (1+x)n(1+x)^n are in AP, the sum of all possible values of nn is
  1. A. 1414
  2. B. 2121
  3. C. 77
  4. D. 2828
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2121

The coefficients are (n4),(n5),(n6)\binom n4,\binom n5,\binom n6. The AP condition 2(n5)=(n4)+(n6)2\binom n5=\binom n4+\binom n6 simplifies to n2−21n+98=0n^2-21n+98=0, i.e. (n−7)(n−14)=0(n-7)(n-14)=0. So n=7n=7 or n=14n=14, and the sum is 2121. Answering 1414 takes only the larger root, while n=7n=7 must be accepted since (76)\binom76 is defined.
