In the expansion of (1+x)^10, consider the statements. 1. The greatest binomial coefficient is 252. 2. The number of terms is 10.

Single correct option

In the expansion of (1+x)10(1+x)^{10}, consider the statements.

1. The greatest binomial coefficient is 252.
2. The number of terms is 10.

Which of the statements is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1 only

For n=10n=10 (even) the greatest coefficient is the middle one, (105)=252\binom{10}{5}=252, so statement 1 is true. The expansion of (1+x)n(1+x)^n has n+1=11n+1=11 terms, so statement 2 is false. Only statement 1 is correct.
