Single correct option

In the expansion of (1+x)n(1+x)^n, the coefficients of x3x^3 and x4x^4 are in the ratio 1:21:2. The value of nn is
  1. A. 99
  2. B. 1111
  3. C. 1010
  4. D. 1212
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1111

Using (n4)(n3)=n−34\dfrac{\binom n4}{\binom n3}=\dfrac{n-3}{4}, the ratio (n3):(n4)=1:2\binom n3:\binom n4=1:2 gives n−34=2\dfrac{n-3}4=2, so n=11n=11. Check: (113)=165\binom{11}3=165 and (114)=330\binom{11}4=330. Reversing the ratio gives n−34=12\tfrac{n-3}{4}=\tfrac12 and n=5n=5.
