Answer: (C) Both 1 and 2

The Lok Sabha elects its Speaker from among its members after each general election, so statement 1 is correct. Under Article 108 the joint sitting called to resolve a deadlock is presided over by the Speaker, and in his absence by the Deputy Speaker, not by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Both statements are correct.
