Let f(x)=(e^3x-1)/(2x) for x≠0 and f(0)=k. If f is continuous at x=0, then k equals

Single correct option

Let f(x)=e3x−12xf(x)=\frac{e^{3x}-1}{2x} for x≠0x\ne0 and f(0)=kf(0)=k. If ff is continuous at x=0x=0, then kk equals
  1. A. 33
  2. B. 12\frac12
  3. C. 00
  4. D. 32\frac32
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 32\frac32

lim⁡x→0e3x−12x=32lim⁡e3x−13x=32\lim_{x\to0}\frac{e^{3x}-1}{2x}=\frac32\lim\frac{e^{3x}-1}{3x}=\frac32. Continuity needs k=32k=\frac32. Using lim⁡e3x−13x=1\lim\frac{e^{3x}-1}{3x}=1 without the factor 32\frac32 gives a wrong constant, and 00 comes from substituting x=0x=0 in the numerator only.
