Single correct option

In a food chain, 10,000 J of energy is available at the producer level. According to the 10 per cent law, the energy available to the tertiary consumer will be
  1. A. 10 J
  2. B. 1 J
  3. C. 100 J
  4. D. 1000 J
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 10 J

Only about 10 per cent of the energy passes to the next trophic level. Producer 10,000 J gives primary consumer 1000 J, secondary consumer 100 J and tertiary consumer 10 J. The common error is to stop one level early (100 J) or count one level too many (1 J).
