Single correct option

The angles of elevation of the top of a tower from two points on a line through its foot, at distances 99 m and 1616 m from it, are complementary. The height of the tower is
  1. A. 1010 m
  2. B. 1414 m
  3. C. 1212 m
  4. D. 252\dfrac{25}2 m
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 1212 m

If the angles are α\alpha and 90∘−α90^\circ-\alpha, then tan⁡α=h9\tan\alpha=\dfrac h9 and cot⁡α=h16\cot\alpha=\dfrac h{16}. Multiplying, h2144=1\dfrac{h^2}{144}=1, so h=12h=12 m (the geometric mean of 9 and 16).
