Single correct option

A flagstaff 1010 m long stands on top of a vertical tower. From a point on the level ground the angles of elevation of the bottom and the top of the flagstaff are 30∘30^\circ and 60∘60^\circ respectively. The height of the tower is
  1. A. 55 m
  2. B. 535\sqrt3 m
  3. C. 1010 m
  4. D. 10310\sqrt3 m
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 55 m

Let the tower have height HH and the point be at distance dd from its foot. Then H=dtan⁡30∘=d3H=d\tan30^\circ=\frac d{\sqrt3} and H+10=dtan⁡60∘=d3H+10=d\tan60^\circ=d\sqrt3. Subtracting, 10=d(3−13)=2d310=d\left(\sqrt3-\frac1{\sqrt3}\right)=\frac{2d}{\sqrt3}, so d=53d=5\sqrt3 and H=5H=5 m. Taking dd as the answer is the trap.
