Single correct option

A kite is flying at the end of a taut string 100100 m long, inclined at 60∘60^\circ to the horizontal ground. The height of the kite above the ground is
  1. A. 50350\sqrt3 m
  2. B. 5050 m
  3. C. 1003\dfrac{100}{\sqrt3} m
  4. D. 1003100\sqrt3 m
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 50350\sqrt3 m

The string is the hypotenuse, so the height is 100sin⁡60∘=100×32=503100\sin60^\circ=100\times\dfrac{\sqrt3}2=50\sqrt3 m. Using cos⁡60∘\cos60^\circ gives 50 m, which is the horizontal distance, a frequent mix-up.
