If log 2x+log 4x+log 16x=7, then x equals

Single correct option

If log⁡2x+log⁡4x+log⁡16x=7\log_2x+\log_4x+\log_{16}x=7, then xx equals
  1. A. 88
  2. B. 1212
  3. C. 1616
  4. D. 3232
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 1616

Express all logarithms in base 22: log⁡4x=12log⁡2x\log_4x=\frac12\log_2x and log⁡16x=14log⁡2x\log_{16}x=\frac14\log_2x. The equation becomes (1+12+14)log⁡2x=7\left(1+\frac12+\frac14\right)\log_2x=7, so log⁡2x=4\log_2x=4 and x=16x=16. Adding the bases instead of converting is the common error.
