The sum of all the solutions of log 2(x^2-x)=1 is

Single correct option

The sum of all the solutions of log⁡2(x2−x)=1\log_2(x^2-x)=1 is
  1. A. 22
  2. B. 11
  3. C. −1-1
  4. D. 00
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 11

The equation gives x2−x=2x^2-x=2, i.e. x2−x−2=(x−2)(x+1)=0x^2-x-2=(x-2)(x+1)=0, so x=2x=2 or x=−1x=-1. For both values x2−x=2>0x^2-x=2>0, so the logarithm is defined and both are valid. Their sum is 11, which is also read directly as −(−1)/1-(-1)/1. Rejecting −1-1 as 'negative' is the usual wrong step, since the argument, not xx, must be positive.
