Aibak laid the foundation around 1199 but built only the first storey; Iltutmish completed the tower in the early 13th century. Later, Firoz Shah Tughlaq repaired it after lightning damage, and Alauddin Khalji planned an even larger tower, Alai Minar, that remained unfinished.
