Who was the Governor-General of India at the time of the Revolt of 1857?
- A. Lord Dalhousie
- B. Lord Lytton
- C. Lord Canning
- D. Lord Ripon
Show answer and solution
Answer: (C) Lord Canning
Lord Canning was Governor-General from 1856 and became the first Viceroy after the Government of India Act 1858 transferred power from the Company to the Crown. Dalhousie, his predecessor, had annexed Awadh in 1856 under the pretext of misgovernance, which fed discontent. Lytton (1876-80) and Ripon (1880-84) came much later.
