Single correct option

Machines AA and BB produce 60%60\% and 40%40\% of the items in a factory, and 2%2\% and 5%5\% of their output respectively is defective. An item picked at random is found defective. The probability that it was produced by BB is
  1. A. 58\frac58
  2. B. 25\frac25
  3. C. 12\frac12
  4. D. 38\frac38
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 58\frac58

By Bayes' theorem, P(B∣D)=0.4×0.050.6×0.02+0.4×0.05=0.0200.032=58P(B\mid D)=\frac{0.4\times0.05}{0.6\times0.02+0.4\times0.05}=\frac{0.020}{0.032}=\frac58. The value 0.050.05 (or 120\frac{1}{20}) is merely the defective rate of BB, and 38\frac38 is the probability of AA.
