Single correct option

Which of the following statements is/are correct?
1. Adding a constant to every observation leaves the standard deviation unchanged.
2. Multiplying every observation by cc multiplies the standard deviation by ∣c∣|c|.
  1. A. 11 only
  2. B. 22 only
  3. C. Both 11 and 22
  4. D. Neither 11 nor 22
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Both 11 and 22

Spread is unaffected by shifting, so Statement 1 holds. Scaling by cc scales deviations by cc, hence σ→∣c∣σ\sigma\to|c|\sigma, so Statement 2 also holds. Both are correct; note the absolute value if c<0c<0.
