One or more options correct

Correct statement(s) according to molecular orbital theory (for B2,C2,N2+,O22−\mathrm{B_2, C_2, N_2^+, O_2^{2-}} use the MO ordering with σ2p\sigma_{2p} above π2p\pi_{2p} for B2,C2,N2+\mathrm{B_2, C_2, N_2^+}) is(are)
  1. A. C2\mathrm{C_2} has bond order 22 and is diamagnetic
  2. B. B2\mathrm{B_2} has bond order 11 and is diamagnetic
  3. C. N2+\mathrm{N_2^+} has bond order 2.52.5 and is paramagnetic
  4. D. O22−\mathrm{O_2^{2-}} has bond order 11 and is paramagnetic
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, C

For C2\mathrm{C_2} (12 electrons) the configuration is σ1s2σ1s∗2σ2s2σ2s∗2π2p4\sigma_{1s}^2\sigma^{*2}_{1s}\sigma_{2s}^2\sigma^{*2}_{2s}\pi_{2p}^4, so bond order is (8−4)/2=2(8-4)/2=2 and all electrons are paired: option A is correct. For B2\mathrm{B_2} (10 electrons) the last two electrons occupy the degenerate π2p\pi_{2p} orbitals singly with parallel spins, giving bond order 11 but two unpaired electrons, so it is paramagnetic and option B is wrong. N2+\mathrm{N_2^+} has 13 electrons, σ2p\sigma_{2p} holds a single electron, giving bond order (9−4)/2=2.5(9-4)/2=2.5 with one unpaired electron: option C is correct. O22−\mathrm{O_2^{2-}} has 18 electrons with π2p∗\pi^*_{2p} completely filled (π∗4\pi^{*4}), so bond order is 11 but it is diamagnetic, making option D wrong.
