One or more options correct

Using molecular orbital theory (for B2\mathrm{B_2}, C2\mathrm{C_2}, N2\mathrm{N_2} and the species derived from them the π2p\pi_{2p} orbitals lie below σ2p\sigma_{2p}; for O2\mathrm{O_2} and its ions σ2p\sigma_{2p} lies below π2p\pi_{2p}), the correct statement(s) is/are
  1. A. C2\mathrm{C_2} is diamagnetic and has a bond order of 2
  2. B. B2\mathrm{B_2} has a bond order of 1 and is diamagnetic
  3. C. Removal of one electron shortens the bond in O2\mathrm{O_2} but lengthens the bond in N2\mathrm{N_2}
  4. D. NO+\mathrm{NO^{+}} has a higher bond order than NO\mathrm{NO} and is diamagnetic
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, C, D

Fill the molecular orbitals in the stated order and compute bond order =12(Nb−Na)=\tfrac12(N_b-N_a). C2\mathrm{C_2} (12 electrons) has π2p4\pi_{2p}^4 as the highest occupied set with no unpaired electrons, so it is diamagnetic with bond order 2: (A) is correct. B2\mathrm{B_2} (10 electrons) places one electron in each of the two degenerate π2p\pi_{2p} orbitals (Hund's rule), so it is paramagnetic with two unpaired electrons although its bond order is 1: (B) is wrong. Removing an electron from O2\mathrm{O_2} takes it from the antibonding π2p∗\pi^*_{2p} orbital, raising the bond order from 2 to 2.5 and shortening the bond; removing one from N2\mathrm{N_2} takes it from the bonding σ2p\sigma_{2p}, lowering the order from 3 to 2.5 and lengthening the bond: (C) is correct. NO\mathrm{NO} has bond order 2.5 with one unpaired electron in π∗\pi^*; NO+\mathrm{NO^{+}} (14 electrons, isoelectronic with N2\mathrm{N_2}) has order 3 and no unpaired electrons: (D) is correct. Answer: A, C, D.
