Using molecular orbital theory for homonuclear and heteronuclear diatomic species (for O2 and heavier, the σ2p lies below π2p; for B2, C2, N2 and…

One or more options correct

Using molecular orbital theory for homonuclear and heteronuclear diatomic species (for O2\mathrm{O_2} and heavier, the σ2p\sigma_{2p} lies below π2p\pi_{2p}; for B2\mathrm{B_2}, C2\mathrm{C_2}, N2\mathrm{N_2} and N2+\mathrm{N_2^+} it lies above), the CORRECT statement(s) is/are
  1. A. N2+\mathrm{N_2^+} has bond order 2.52.5 and is diamagnetic.
  2. B. The bond length increases in the order O2+<O2<O2−<O22−\mathrm{O_2^+}<\mathrm{O_2}<\mathrm{O_2^-}<\mathrm{O_2^{2-}}.
  3. C. B2\mathrm{B_2} is diamagnetic because its two π2p\pi_{2p} electrons are paired in one orbital.
  4. D. NO+\mathrm{NO^+} has bond order 33 and is paramagnetic with one unpaired electron.

Answer: B

Fill the MOs and count. (A) N2+\mathrm{N_2^+} has 13 electrons: σ2s2σ2s∗2π2p4σ2p1\sigma_{2s}^2\sigma_{2s}^{*2}\pi_{2p}^4\sigma_{2p}^1, giving bond order (9−4)/2=2.5(9-4)/2=2.5, but the single electron in σ2p\sigma_{2p} is unpaired, so it is paramagnetic: wrong. (B) Bond orders are O2+=2.5\mathrm{O_2^+}=2.5, O2=2.0\mathrm{O_2}=2.0, O2−=1.5\mathrm{O_2^-}=1.5 and O22−=1.0\mathrm{O_2^{2-}}=1.0, and bond length varies inversely with bond order, so the stated order is correct. (C) In B2\mathrm{B_2} the two π2p\pi_{2p} electrons occupy the two degenerate π\pi orbitals singly with parallel spins (Hund's rule), so B2\mathrm{B_2} is paramagnetic with two unpaired electrons: wrong. (D) NO+\mathrm{NO^+} is isoelectronic with N2\mathrm{N_2} (10 valence electrons, bond order 3), and has all electrons paired, so it is diamagnetic: wrong. Only (B) is correct.
