Numerical answer

A mixture of 11 mol of a monatomic and 11 mol of a rigid diatomic ideal gas is slowly taken through a process in which the pressure is directly proportional to the volume (P∝VP\propto V). The ratio of the heat absorbed by the mixture to the work done by it, Q/WQ/W, is
Show answer and solution

Answer: 5

For the mixture (2 mol in all) the total heat capacity at constant volume is CV=(32+52)R=4RC_V=\left(\tfrac32+\tfrac52\right)R=4R, so the internal energy change is ΔU=4R ΔT\Delta U=4R\,\Delta T. In the process P=kVP=kV the work is W=∫P dV=k2(V22−V12)=12(P2V2−P1V1)W=\int P\,dV=\tfrac{k}{2}(V_2^2-V_1^2)=\tfrac12(P_2V_2-P_1V_1). Using PV=nRTPV=nRT with n=2n=2 this becomes W=12 (2R)ΔT=R ΔTW=\tfrac12\,(2R)\Delta T=R\,\Delta T. The first law gives Q=ΔU+W=4RΔT+RΔT=5RΔTQ=\Delta U+W=4R\Delta T+R\Delta T=5R\Delta T. Therefore Q/W=5Q/W=5. Note that the answer does not depend on how large the temperature change is, only on the gas composition, because both ΔU\Delta U and WW are proportional to ΔT\Delta T. A mistake is to use the molar CPC_P or to count only one mole.
