Single correct option

A 2×22\times2 real matrix AA has trace 55 and determinant 66. Then det⁡(A2+I)\det\left(A^2+I\right) equals
  1. A. 3636
  2. B. 2525
  3. C. 6060
  4. D. 5050
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 5050

By the Cayley-Hamilton theorem A2−(tr⁡A)A+(det⁡A)I=0A^2-(\operatorname{tr}A)A+(\det A)I=0, so A2=5A−6IA^2=5A-6I. Then A2+I=5A−5I=5(A−I)A^2+I=5A-5I=5(A-I) and, for a 2×22\times2 matrix, det⁡(5(A−I))=25det⁡(A−I)\det(5(A-I))=25\det(A-I). Also det⁡(A−I)=det⁡A−tr⁡A+1=6−5+1=2\det(A-I)=\det A-\operatorname{tr}A+1=6-5+1=2. Hence det⁡(A2+I)=25⋅2=50\det(A^2+I)=25\cdot2=50. Check with eigenvalues 22 and 33 (roots of λ2−5λ+6\lambda^2-5\lambda+6): (22+1)(32+1)=5⋅10=50(2^2+1)(3^2+1)=5\cdot10=50. A frequent error is to forget the factor 525^2 when taking the determinant of 5(A−I)5(A-I). Any matrix with these invariants, such as diag⁡(2,3)\operatorname{diag}(2,3), can be used to test the result quickly.
