Numerical answer

A 3×33\times3 real matrix AA has characteristic polynomial λ3−6λ2+11λ−6\lambda^3-6\lambda^2+11\lambda-6. The value of ∣adj⁡(A)+2I∣\left|\operatorname{adj}(A)+2I\right| is
Show answer and solution

Answer: 160

The characteristic polynomial factors as (λ−1)(λ−2)(λ−3)(\lambda-1)(\lambda-2)(\lambda-3), so the eigenvalues of AA are 1,2,31,2,3 and ∣A∣=6|A|=6. Since adj⁡A=∣A∣ A−1\operatorname{adj}A=|A|\,A^{-1}, the eigenvalues of adj⁡A\operatorname{adj}A are 61,62,63=6,3,2\dfrac61,\dfrac62,\dfrac63=6,3,2. Adding 2I2I shifts every eigenvalue by 22, giving 8,5,48,5,4. The determinant is the product of the eigenvalues: 8⋅5⋅4=1608\cdot5\cdot4=160. One may check with the diagonal matrix diag⁡(1,2,3)\operatorname{diag}(1,2,3), whose adjugate is diag⁡(6,3,2)\operatorname{diag}(6,3,2). The eigenvalue route needs no explicit AA and is the shortest path to the determinant of the shifted adjugate.
