Single correct option

Let AA be a 3×33\times3 real matrix with A2=AA^2=A and tr⁡(A)=2\operatorname{tr}(A)=2. Then det⁡(I+A)\det(I+A) equals
  1. A. 33
  2. B. 44
  3. C. 66
  4. D. 88
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 44

If λ\lambda is an eigenvalue of AA then λ2=λ\lambda^2=\lambda, so every eigenvalue is 00 or 11. The trace is the sum of the three eigenvalues (with multiplicity), so exactly two of them equal 11 and one equals 00. The eigenvalues of I+AI+A are 1+λ1+\lambda, namely 2,2,12,2,1, and the determinant is their product, 44. As a check, A=diag⁡(1,1,0)A=\operatorname{diag}(1,1,0) gives det⁡(I+A)=2⋅2⋅1=4\det(I+A)=2\cdot2\cdot1=4. The value det⁡(2I−A)=2\det(2I-A)=2 is a different quantity.
