Single correct option

Let a,b,ca,b,c be the roots of x3−6x2+11x−4=0x^3-6x^2+11x-4=0. The value of the determinant ∣1+a1111+b1111+c∣\begin{vmatrix}1+a&1&1\\1&1+b&1\\1&1&1+c\end{vmatrix} is
  1. A. 1111
  2. B. 1515
  3. C. 77
  4. D. 1717
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1515

Subtract the first row from the second and third rows, or expand directly: ∣1+a1111+b1111+c∣=abc+ab+bc+ca\begin{vmatrix}1+a&1&1\\1&1+b&1\\1&1&1+c\end{vmatrix}=abc+ab+bc+ca. (Verification: expanding gives (1+a)(1+b)(1+c)−(1+a)−(1+b)−(1+c)+2(1+a)(1+b)(1+c)-(1+a)-(1+b)-(1+c)+2, which simplifies to abc+ab+bc+caabc+ab+bc+ca.) For the cubic x3−6x2+11x−4x^3-6x^2+11x-4 the symmetric functions are a+b+c=6a+b+c=6, ab+bc+ca=11ab+bc+ca=11 and abc=4abc=4. Hence the determinant equals 4+11=154+11=15. A numerical check with the three real roots of the cubic also returns 1515. Using a+b+ca+b+c instead of abcabc would give the incorrect value 1717.
