Single correct option

Three resistors of 6 ohm each are connected in parallel and this combination is connected in series with a 4 ohm resistor across a 12 V battery. The current drawn from the battery is
  1. A. 1 A
  2. B. 2 A
  3. C. 3 A
  4. D. 1.2 A
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2 A

Three 6 ohm resistors in parallel give 6/3 = 2 ohm. Adding 4 ohm in series gives a total of 6 ohm. Current I = V/R = 12/6 = 2 A. Using a single 6 ohm resistor in place of the parallel combination gives 10 ohm and 1.2 A, and adding all four in series gives 22 ohm and about 0.55 A.
