The line joining (2,-3) and (6,5) is cut by the y-axis in the ratio

Single correct option

The line joining (2,−3)(2,-3) and (6,5)(6,5) is cut by the yy-axis in the ratio
  1. A. internally 1:31:3
  2. B. externally 1:31:3
  3. C. externally 3:13:1
  4. D. internally 1:21:2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) externally 1:31:3

Let the yy-axis divide the segment in the ratio k:1k:1. Then the xx-coordinate is 6k+2k+1=0\dfrac{6k+2}{k+1}=0, giving k=−13k=-\dfrac13. A negative ratio means external division, in the ratio 1:31:3. Both end points lie on the same side of the yy-axis (x=2x=2 and x=6x=6), which also shows that the division cannot be internal.
